Quick Reference

Credit report fraud alert.
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion share fraud alert notices. Contact any one of these credit bureau numbers to submit a fraud alert and the alert will automatically be sent to the other two bureaus.

The fraud alert expires in 90 days. Plan to renew it every 90 days (for free). That's what the ID theft insurance companies do. You may request another 90-day fraud alert or an active duty alert by submitting a new request within 30 days of your current alert expiring.

Free annual credit reports.

You can order all three at once, but it's wiser to order a different report at four month intervals. Order your spouse's credit reports two months after you order each of yours.

(Don't confuse this with other web sites that claim to offer 'free credit reports'. Some sites claim a free service that automatically converts to a monthly fee if you don't cancel your membership after a trial period.)
